BACKGROUND
Himchan doesn’t have any turning points in his life, no trauma to push him away from his family or dramatic event that forced him into racing. Simply put, he likes working on machines, specifically of the internal combustion variety. There’s something so simple about a complex engine, because even if it seems like it’s impossible it really is just a huge puzzle with rules and one acceptable solution. Being a mechanic is a little like being a mathematician, and also a little like being crazy.
But even normal guys like Himchan come from somewhere, and in his case it started out being born in Seoul to a family of a mother, father, and older sister. Himchan wasn’t the brightest kid in his class, but he did seem to have a knack for math and also taking apart anything he could get his hands on “so he could see how it worked.” Rarely did he ever put things back together with much success. Eventually, though, he started getting good at remembering what was connected where, allowing him to disassemble and reassemble electronics without anyone being the wiser. He even improved a few things, like his sister’s cellphone and the family rice cooker.
High school proved a trying time for Himchan, like it tends to do for all teenagers. His parents decided that it was the perfect time to start considering divorce, and Himchan’s sister started showing more interest in hooking up with guys rather than playing with her little brother. All in all, Himchan was left to keep himself to himself. His unremarkable grades continued, and he slipped by unnoticed by teachers for better or for worse. There were a few guys that bullied him, because they bullied everyone else in his homeroom, but they never took more money than he could afford to part with and only ever bruised him where teachers wouldn’t see it under his clothes. An average existence. Himchan didn’t mind.
When graduation rolled around, Himchan found himself headed for vocational school. His father told him that mechanics would never be out of a job, figuring that Himchan’s ability to take things apart must mean something. He excelled, though he wasn’t a genius in the field by any means. Car engines were easy, easier than his mother and her boyfriend moving to Gangnam and taking his sister with them while Himchan and his father shared a rooftop room north of the river. School was an escape, and gave him room to breathe even when he was crammed under a car chassis for hours at a time.
After vocational school, Himchan landed himself a job working in a garage, and moved out. Maybe it was a low blow to his father, but he needed the space and opportunity to become a man rather than living as a boy supporting his father’s drinking problem. He sent money to him, when he had enough to spare, but that was the extent of his contact. Himchan had always been a little bad at filial piety. His relationship with his mother was worse, but she was too focused on Himchan’s sister running away to America to do much about it. Their family had fallen apart under their noses, and none of them really cared enough to pick up the pieces.
Now, Himchan has worked his way up in the world while finding a place in some of it’s lower social circles, running his own garage that caters to racers. His team is important to him, but at the same time he isn’t one for deep emotional connection. He’s friendly, loud and outgoing and talkative to a fault, but he hasn’t really let anyone get close because he doesn’t know how to. Maybe it’s because he smokes too much, or tends to let his fingernails get black with engine grease, or maybe it has more to do with the fact that he never really learned about give and take from his family. No matter what the reason is, his crew has become his new family, and one that he’s more willing to fight for than any biological ties he’s ever had.
FACTS
1. Himchan got his very unoriginal alias from his tattos, of which he has at least a dozen though some of them run together. Mostly he accepted the nickname because being called Tokki because of his teeth tended to put him in a killing mood. "Ratchet" is what the guys around the shop call him sometimes, though it's not as much an alias as it is a nickname.
2. Though he’s not a racer, Himchan still loves cars enough to have bought himself a sweet ride. His cherry red Scion FR-S is his baby, and he works on her almost weekly to keep her fine-tuned and purring like a little sex kitten. Oh, and her name is Ddalgi.
3. His tattoos range from large to small, and not all of them have meanings but they sure look damn cool. [Mody modifications listed separately below.]
4. Despite being a little terrible at it, Himchan likes to skateboard when he has the time. Some of his friends give him shit about it, because why skate when you’ve got a sick car? But sometimes he likes the simplicity and the fact that he doesn’t have to park a damn skateboard in the middle of Seoul.
5. Even if he looks like a hardcore guy (and acts like it) he can actually be a really goofy and sweet guy. Not a lot of people see it, since Himchan has to keep up the tough act around the garage and his team to maintain respect, but glimpses of it might come out when he’s not in a group. While he can be an airhead, he’s good at remembering important things like birthdays and always has food around to feed people. Don’t let it fool you, though, because he will fuck you up if you mess with someone he cares about.
6. He isn't particularly loyal to his team, seeing it more as a means of income and connections to other racers that might need his services. He's friendly with his teammates, though, affectionate towards the "twins" and listens well enough to the "boss". Regardless, he isn't fiercely loyal to the point of turning away work when another team comes calling. He does draw the line on working on lead cars, though, which is fine because crews rarely look for outside assistance on them anyways.
7. Absolutely hates matte paint, totally and completely. He refuses to work on anything with a matte finish because it's impractical and a bitch to buff out and just causes more problems than it's worth. It doesn't even look good. He also won't paint your ride matte, but he'd be happy to refer you to some moron who will.
